Over the years Irish Door Systems has demonstrated an enviable knack of flourishing in even the most testing of times and 2020 proved to be no exception, as Estelle Power, Director, explained to Construction Industry News when we recently caught up with her.
“Navigating our way through the pandemic has been challenging in terms of keeping our teams safe and the business operational,” outlines Estelle. “Nevertheless, true to form, 2020 was an exceptionally positive year for IDS, in fact it was one of our best years to date. This mirrors our performance back in 2008 at the time of the last recession, when despite a massive downturn in the economy we swiftly diversified the business resulting in increasing the size of the company three-fold.”
How Cork-based IDS has thrived during the pandemic proves that this is a dynamic and fast paced company that strives under pressure. When faced with challenges, the team simply seeks out the opportunities and growth potential.
Since 2006 IDS has been providing pioneering automatic entry solutions to buildings in all sectors. Creating safe secure access points to its clients’ buildings has always been at the core of its approach.
There’s been huge increased demand for Automatic Entrance Systems across multiple markets due to Covid-19. With regards to specific sectors, IDS has understandably seen huge interest from Healthcare, particularly within hospitals, care homes and nursing homes, all of which have a significant requirement for automation. The Food, Pharmaceutical, Construction, Educational & Hospitality Sectors are also proving fruitful, as they continue to demonstrate strong levels of growth within the Irish economy. In the last 18 months the company has won significant projects for major Blue Chip clients that have once again affirmed its reputation for both excellent quality products and service.
“Our uniqueness is being in complete control of all processes – from the first consultation with the client, to the design, followed by manufacturing high quality systems in-house right through to supply, fitting, servicing and maintaining all of the products we provide,” says Estelle. “Each unique and important step occurs within our customised manufacturing plant, all under one roof, which ensures each step is carefully controlled resulting in high quality superior completed products.
IDS is expecting to continue on this upward curve as it is widely recognised for its unique and continuing focus on developing innovative products such as Hermetic and GRP doors. These products were designed and developed to complement the existing range. Specialist GRP Doors (Glass Fibre Reinforced Polyester doors) are specially designed for internal premises that require high level of hygienic characteristics, are water and moisture resistant, and additionally offer extreme durability. GRP doors are manufactured using a pressure moulding process that creates a seamless door with no joints and are non-porous. These types of durable doors prohibit the growth of bacteria or any transfer of viruses such as Covid-19. GRP Doors are used in environments where hygiene is of paramount importance, such as cleanrooms, hospitals, laboratories, food processing facilities and supermarkets, to name just a few.
Strengthening its operation even further, IDS has developed a new division to the business having branched into manufacturing a wide range of steel glazing and door systems. Products such as fire rated internal and external doors and windows using highly aesthetic slim profile systems with sight lines down to 25mm to maximize light and complement surroundings.
“Our state of the art production facility can process profile systems from the leading European suppliers to realise complex designs from single door elements to whole
screen systems and curtain walling,” says Estelle. “IDS carry out a substantial amount of the arching and curving of steel key requirements for protected listed buildings, such as old factories and warehouses, that would only take steel products as opposed to aluminum. We are always happy to provide technical support and consulting on any of our systems.”
The success of this new venture hasn’t come about by accident, as an impressive amount of groundwork went into paving the way for the development. Prior to its implementation, IDS tested the market for around two years carrying out all the necessary research into the type of machinery and training that would be needed, as it was a whole new line of its production.
Again demonstrating significant foresight, IDS relocated to larger premises four years ago and now has a 20,000 sq ft manufacturing plant, giving it ample space to support future growth. The site is also ideally located, providing excellent transport links to all areas of the country.
Thanks to the ongoing investment it has made and the strong levels of business that IDS has been enjoying as a result, the company has not only been able to retain all its existing staff but has actually increased its numbers during the pandemic. “We have a dedicated and highly motivated team,” outlines Estelle. “The expertise in-house is impressive, spanning more then 35 years of combined experience and knowledge within our sector. Our team are driven and committed to provide a top quality service for all our clients which results in repeat business, referrals and a strong market presence.”
IDS has very extensive and well established strong supply chains with world-renowned brands, which means they can source practically any type of parts / equipment very promptly at competitive rates. This provides their loyal clients with the reassurance and trust that IDS will consistently deliver a superior service and exceptionally quick lead times.
“We offer our clients a 24/7 nationwide emergency call out service,” says Estelle. “Our highly qualified and experienced engineers are available 365 days of the year to ensure that interruption to our customers’ businesses are kept to a minimum. IDS Engineers are certified in conjunction with key industrial technical regulations & work in accordance to EN 16005 regulations. We continuously update and train our teams on issues such as best practices for specific equipment types.”
Award-winning IDS provide all its clients with a superior aftersales service and offer them comprehensive maintenance contracts ensuring the equipment reaches its optimum usage potential. Planned Preventative Maintenance offers clients the reassurance that IDS are there to serve them and service their equipment ensuring it is properly maintained, safe to use and fully compliant.
Having chalked up such a strong 2020 against all the odds, IDS is now determined to keep the momentum going throughout 2021 too. “The plan for the rest of the year is to continue with our growth and we are committed to being the market leaders in every element of what we do. We have a fantastic team providing a phenomenal service so the main aim is to build further on this and increase brand awareness.
“We’d also like to develop our export opportunities and explore markets in other EU countries. This is a sector of our business that we’ve been working on for a few years and as a consequence there aren’t many other companies in the country that can provide what we do. With excellent facilities and highly trained staff, we have everything we need to carry out a very bespoke service, which is one of our key selling points. Innovation, research and development are the core of what we are all about – we excel at creating bespoke solutions and custom-designed systems for our customers. We can also turn products around exceptionally quickly, as there’s very little that we need to outsource, it pretty much all happens under one roof.”
Even though it’s been a challenging year for IDS, it is clear that the company has not only survived the pandemic but is actually thriving as it looks ahead with confidence. “It’s been very difficult for many different sectors and businesses but we’ve also seen a lot of opportunity and we’re extremely excited about the future,” concludes Estelle. “Of course there will always be bumps in the road to contend with, but we’re also confident that there’s lots of good things to come too. We’re feeling very upbeat about the year ahead and beyond.”
Given the success that IDS has achieved when the chips are down, this positivity looks well justified as the company continues to develop its business in a wide range of areas.
