£6.4m Bishop Auckland bus station opens following major regeneration by Esh Construction

A new £6.4m Bishop Auckland Bus Station has officially opened to the public, marking a significant upgrade to the town centre’s transport infrastructure. Delivered by Esh Construction on behalf of Durham County Council, the modern transport hub has been built on the site of the former Saddler Street facility and is designed to provide a safe, accessible and welcoming environment for residents and visitors.

The opening ceremony, attended by representatives from Esh Construction and Durham County Council, followed the completion of the bus station and £1.8m of associated enabling works. The scheme forms part of wider regeneration efforts to improve connectivity and support Bishop Auckland’s long-term economic vitality.

Steven Garrigan, Divisional Director at Esh Construction, said: “Esh is proud to have delivered a modern, fully accessible transport hub that will play an important role in supporting Bishop Auckland’s regeneration and strengthening local connectivity. Working closely with Durham County Council, the project reflects our commitment to delivering high-quality infrastructure that serves communities while creating meaningful social value.”

The new transport hub includes real-time passenger information, CCTV, toilet facilities – including accessible toilets, a Changing Places unit and parent-and-child facilities – as well as a retail kiosk. Anti-slip flooring, improved seating, and wheelchair spaces at the front of each waiting.
