Firecrest Construction completes 40-bed care home for Exemplar Health Care

Firecrest Construction has successfully completed the delivery of a new 40-bed specialist care home in Bury town centre for Exemplar Health Care.

Acting as principal contractor, the Leeds-based firm delivered the complex scheme on time and within budget, achieving practical completion after a 64-week programme. The home, named Jubilee Heights, is set to open later this year.

Jubilee Heights will provide high-quality nursing care for adults living with complex needs, including brain injuries, dementia, mental health conditions, neuro-disabilities, and physical disabilities. As Exemplar Health Care’s sixth facility in Greater Manchester, the development is expected to create around 100 jobs within the local community.

The care home has been constructed on the site of the former Bury Police headquarters, which was vacated in 2010 and demolished in 2016. Firecrest undertook a full programme of site remediation and groundworks before delivering the 70,000 sq ft facility, arranged across two and three storeys.

External works include car parking with EV charging points, lighting, and landscaped gardens, supporting both accessibility and resident wellbeing.

Callum Hepples, Commercial Manager at Firecrest Construction, said: “We are delighted to successfully deliver Jubilee Heights, our first project for Exemplar Health Care. The scheme reflects our expertise in delivering complex care sector developments, where quality, safety and operational requirements are critical.

The site presented significant logistical challenges, being located in a busy town centre with restricted access and adjacent to key local amenities. Despite this, we completed the project without disruption to surrounding infrastructure, including nearby highways, a sports centre, public car park and residential areas.

Internally, the building has been designed to meet the specific needs of residents, with a strong focus on safety and specialist care provision. The home includes four secure units, each with 10 en-suite bedrooms, alongside sensory bathrooms, therapy spaces, an activities hub and carefully designed support facilities. Additional measures have been incorporated to ensure safe medication storage and to manage risks associated with electrics and heat appliances.”

Firecrest delivered the project in partnership with Watson Batty Architects, Dudleys Consulting Engineers, and Pennington Choices.

Exemplar Health Care is a leading UK provider of nursing care for adults with complex needs, operating more than 60 community-based care homes nationwide. With over 25 years of experience, the organisation provides an important alternative to long-term hospital care.

Jess Taylor, Home Manager at Exemplar Health Care, said: “Our aim is to make every day better for the people we support by delivering person-centred care that promotes independence, builds everyday living skills and empowers individuals to live fulfilling lives.

Jubilee Heights will bring vital specialist care services to the area while also creating significant employment opportunities. We are committed to ensuring the home becomes part of the local community, offering opportunities for residents to engage through work placements, events and volunteering.”
