Work is set to begin on a £1.1m programme of public realm improvements in Morley town centre in West Yorkshire following the appointment of contractor CR Reynolds Ltd to deliver the scheme.
Part of the wider Morley Town Deal programme, the project is being funded through the Government’s Local Regeneration Funding programme and supported by Leeds City Council. The investment will focus on Queen Street’s pedestrianised area and Commercial Street, with the aim of enhancing the town centre environment, improving accessibility and supporting future economic growth.
The scheme will see new seating and planting introduced alongside wider public realm enhancements designed to create a more welcoming and attractive destination for residents, businesses and visitors. Improvements are also expected to boost footfall and encourage further investment in the town centre.
Councillor James Lewis, Leader of Leeds City Council, said: “The start of the public realm work in Morley town centre marks the culmination of years of planning and public consultation to deliver an improved town centre experience for all.
“The planned changes to the pedestrian area on Queen Street and the highway works on Commercial Street will not only make the area more visually appealing but will also have practical benefits in terms of accessibility and safety.
“This work is only the start of the planned improvements for the town, with three further schemes along Station Road, Queen Street North and Town Square scheduled to be delivered over the next six months.”
Following a competitive procurement process, CR Reynolds Ltd has been appointed to carry out the works. Construction is expected to commence later this month, with the project scheduled for completion in early 2027.
Despite the construction programme, Morley town centre will remain open throughout the works, with local retailers, hospitality venues and service providers continuing to trade as normal.
Gerald Jennings, Chair of the Morley Town Deal, said: “The Morley Town Deal set out with the aspiration to create education and career opportunities, improve the town centre experience and build economic growth.
“These public realm improvements, together with the work to rejuvenate the Town Hall and deliver a new learning and skills centre, continue to deliver on that aspiration and help Morley be one of the best places in Leeds to live, learn, work, trade and visit.
“While there may be some temporary disruption during the work, I encourage everyone to continue to use the town centre as normal and support Morley’s incredible range of local businesses in the usual way.”
The works have been carefully phased to minimise disruption, while clear signage and regular updates will be provided throughout the construction period. Leeds City Council and the contractor will also work closely with local businesses to reduce the impact of the scheme wherever possible.
The town centre improvements form part of a wider programme of investment being delivered through the Morley Town Deal, which aims to strengthen the town’s economy, enhance public spaces and create new opportunities for local communities and businesses.
