Wates Smartspace has completed a full refurbishment of Lloyds Banking Group’s Grade II-listed Trinity Road building in Halifax, West Yorkshire.
Delivered in partnership with Lloyds Banking Group and Calderdale Council, this milestone project marks Lloyds’ landmark office transformation, setting a new benchmark for sustainable, inclusive and heritage-led construction in the region.
Originally opened by Her Majesty the Queen in 1974, the Trinity building holds historical and architectural significance. Wates has transformed the iconic 317,000 sq ft diamond-shaped structure into a dynamic, sustainable workplace for 3,500 colleagues, preserving its unique heritage while integrating advanced systems. Key features, such as the listed timber panelling, York Stone façade and distinctive glass grid lighting remain part of the building, ensuring it continues to be a landmark in Halifax’s landscape.
Following the refurbishment, the site now operates on zero carbon heating via a ground source heat pump system, with boreholes drilled to a depth matching the height of London’s Shard. These measures, combined with significant thermal upgrades, have made the building three times more energy efficient than before.
The building now has three bio-diverse green roofs, a living wall, rainwater harvesting systems and the use of 100% recycled metal and glass in the curtain walling. Waste reduction initiatives saw 99% diversion from landfill and the reuse of 12,000 sq m of carpet from Lloyds’ Leeds site.
Wates delivered over £20m through local suppliers. Through this project Wates and its supply chain supported 112 people into employment, including 75 apprentices, and 460 students experienced site visits and careers talks. Nearly 100 students are now undertaking apprenticeships, graduate placements and T-level qualifications with Lloyds at the Halifax office.
During the project, Wates partnered with local charities, such as Overgate Hospice and Mothershare, donated furniture, sponsored school activities and volunteered over 6,000 hours to community projects.
Scott Camp, Managing Director at Wates Smartspace said: “At Wates, our purpose is to reimagine places for people to thrive, and we are proud to have delivered that in this landmark transformation of Lloyds Banking Group’s historic Halifax building. We’ve honoured the building’s unique heritage while introducing sustainable solutions that make it three times more energy efficient and future ready. This project demonstrates how modernisation and preservation can go hand in hand, delivering a workplace that celebrates its past while embracing a greener, more inclusive future.”
Sharon Doherty, Chief People and Places Officer at Lloyds Banking Group, said: “Halifax has always been at the centre of our story, and this investment in Trinity Road is a testament to our commitment to Yorkshire, our colleagues and the future of the region. We are proud to create a sustainable, inclusive and inspiring workplace that honours our local heritage while supporting the next generation of Yorkshire talent.”
Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, said: “This investment is a fantastic vote of confidence in Calderdale and the wider region.
“By creating a modern, sustainable workplace, Lloyds is investing in our regional talent pipeline as well as bricks and mortar – creating high-quality T-level and apprenticeship opportunities in our vital digital and business sectors.
“Lloyds is setting the bar high for how businesses can preserve our heritage whilst embracing innovation and that is the kind of ambition we want for West Yorkshire.”
