Two way radio manufacturer Vertex has unveiled one of the smallest – and toughest – industry class handheld radios available on the market.
The new EVX-S24 is smaller than the average smartphone and weighs just 215g. But despite its compact stature, it is also one of the more robust two way radios out there. Meeting the IP67 international standard, it is fully dust resistant and waterproof, and will still work even if dropped in standing water.
These properties are designed to appeal to industries like construction where convenience and durability are important considerations in choosing tech accessories. Due to its size, the EVX-S24 is extremely easy to carry around and inconspicuous when clipped to a belt, allowing the carrier to get on with their work unhindered.
Its high waterproof rating means it can be safely used outdoors in all weathers and will withstand prolonged exposure to rain. In addition, its precision engineered sealed chassis protects the electronic circuitry even in the dustiest environments.
Backwards compatible
The EVX-S24 is a digital two way radio model with a full range of high spec features. However, thanks to advanced encoding technology, it will also operate alongside analogue handheld radios. This is really handy for businesses which still have large analogue fleets but want to upgrade to digital, saving the expense of having to upgrade all older handsets at once.
Plus, unlike other so called ‘migration’ models, the EVX-S24 does not have to be reprogrammed to switch from digital to analogue networks. Once set up on either network type, it will connect to both automatically.
This also applies to setting up a handset to work on different networks at different sites. The EVX-S24 will remember the connection and will automatically switch over when moved from one network to another. This is ideal for operatives working across different sites, or for companies running very large sites where multiple networks need to be set up to ensure full coverage.
Digitally enhanced
Although backwards compatibility with analogue radios is useful, there are a number of performance benefits to operating in digital mode. Whereas analogue radios only support talk to all transmissions, in digital mode the EVX-S24 supports private one to one calling, so communication can be better targeted and streamlined.
In Direct Mode, the EVX-S24 allows two communication paths to operate on the same frequency, effectively doubling call capacity. This is a really useful on especially large sites which might get close to reaching the 256 channel capacity.
In the event of an accident or emergency, the EVX-S24 features a transmission interrupt function, which will override all communications in progress on the network to ensure an urgent call or alert gets through.
Digital mode also delivers better audio quality. Intelligent audio control eliminates background noise and adjusts call volumes automatically, while Vertex’s AMBE+2™ vocoder technology improves voice clarity.
