Jones Bros powers ahead with major milestone at Sanquhar II Wind Farm

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has reached a major milestone at the £400m Sanquhar II Wind Farm development, completing all 44 turbine foundations for what will become the fourth largest wind farm in the UK. The CWP Energy-led project, which stretches across Dumfries and Galloway and East Ayrshire, will have the capacity to generate enough renewable energy to power more than 335,000 homes each year once operational.

Working alongside Cambrian Services, Jones Bros completed the foundation programme using concrete produced entirely on site. The approach helped reduce vehicle movements, lower fuel consumption and associated emissions, while improving efficiency throughout the construction phase.

David Nicolson, senior contracts manager at Jones Bros, said: “The completion of all 44 turbine foundations, on time and on budget, marks the culmination of a substantial programme of civil engineering works.

“Delivering this successfully has depended on the expertise and commitment of our site teams, alongside effective planning and coordination throughout the construction process.

“Our on-site batching has helped us manage the demands of the foundation pours, improving efficiency and reducing vehicle movements associated with concrete deliveries.

“It’s rewarding to reach this milestone and see the progress being made at Sanquhar II Wind Farm.”

The completed foundations clear the way for the installation of the UK’s most powerful onshore wind turbine.

The three-bladed V162-6.2MW EnVentus turbine, the only model of its kind currently installed in the UK, has been designed to make the most of the strong wind conditions found across southern Scotland.

Turbine installation is continuing, with first power from the wind farm expected in late 2026.

Rod Wood MBE, managing director of CWP Energy, said: “Reaching the final concrete pour is a significant milestone for the Sanquhar II Wind Farm project.

“With 44 turbine foundations now completed, it is testament to the hard work, expertise and collaboration of everyone involved.

“We’d like to thank Jones Bros and all our project partners for their commitment in helping bring this important renewable energy scheme a step closer to completion.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros employs approximately 570 people and owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK. The company is currently delivering projects across a range of sectors, including highways, flood and marine defence, reservoirs, waste management and renewable energy.

The business also operates an award-winning apprenticeship programme that has helped develop a significant proportion of its workforce, with several senior managers having begun their careers as apprentices or trainees. Over the years, the company has recruited hundreds of apprentices.
