It is testament to the quality of service that Irish construction and fit out specialist, Flynn, provides that the company was part of the team behind the award-winning development of The Remedy Café (RCSI) at St Stephen’s Green in Dublin. The project was recently named Hospitality Project of the Year at the 2018 Fit Out Awards, while Flynn was also in the running for Fit Out Contractor of the Year before narrowly missing out.
“Recognition of this type is very important to us and is a great boost for everyone within the organisation,” explains Aubyn Thompson, Preconstruction and Services Lead. “We have always supported the Fit Out Awards and will continue to do so, particularly as we’re keen to keep developing our fit out expertise. We are a leading name within the Irish fit out market thanks to the high profile projects we have carried out for leading blue chip companies such as Google, LinkedIn, Twitter and we have just finishes a fantastic high end fit-out for CDB Aviation in conjunction with JLL & Henry J Lyons that was a worthy finalist for Fit-out Project of the Year at the Fit Out Awards.”
The calibre of projects and clients that Flynn has been involved with reflects the high standards that the company is operating to. “We take tremendous pride in our work and the portfolio of fit out projects that we’ve completed,” adds Mr Thompson. “The external recognition we have received has been fantastic and we’re determined to keep building on that momentum.”
This success hasn’t come about by accident, as the Flynn quality-led ethos can be traced back to when it was formed 14 years ago by Kevin & Michael Flynn, two brothers from County Meath. From the very beginning there’s been an emphasis on collaboration and an unrelenting drive to not only meet expectations, but exceed them. This approach has ensured that the company has enjoyed continual growth when market conditions were in its favour, while at the same time allowing it to navigate around the rocks when the economic times were less forgiving.

Today, supported by a workforce of 165 staff spread across its headquarters in Dublin and additional offices in Limerick, Cork and, most recently, London and Copenhagen. “Flynn has capacity for over 160m Euros in 2019 with the expansion that we’re seeing in the UK and Europe with existing clients of which we have over 80% repeat business. We set up the operation in Copenhagen to support a data project that we’re carrying out for a confidential Nordic client over there. We initially worked with them in Ireland and they requested our expertise on a project in Denmark.
“A major factor behind the growth that we’ve enjoyed, and this is particularly true of our fit out operation, is that we’ve always worked hard to enhance the team and build the skillset necessary to take us to the next stage in our development. This has allowed us to accrue the knowledge base we need to tackle specialist projects, even in the busiest of city centre locations. This ensures that we’re able to deliver the required quality for the client regardless of how complex a project is.”
Despite the impressive growth it has achieved, Flynn has flourished not through aggressive expansion but by putting the client first at all times. “Our success has been built 100 per cent on the relationships we have developed rather than chasing turnover,” says Thompson. “We have built the business – and continue to build the business – on the back of very strong relationships that we continue to nurture. This approach is mirrored internally, because even though the company is now much larger than when it was first created, it has retained strong family values where everyone is treated equally and made to feel a valued member of the team. Without these relationships, both internally and externally, we wouldn’t have been able to achieve what we have to date. Health and Safety and Sustainability are also vitally important to us as a business, all of which ensures that we have the right infrastructure and mindset to keep progressing.”

As would be expected of such a forward-thinking and proactive company, Flynn is already looking at the long term and its next area for development. “We’re well into our current business planning for 2019 and beyond and we’ve been busy developing and launching a rebrand to reflect our position and expertise in the market. “Our re-brand team spoke to a cross section of our clients to get them involved in the rebrand process and we have had some excellent feedback that we’ve been able to utilise. It’s also reinvigorated our staff as we’ve looked to get their input too. This is vital because whilst we are extremely busy, it’s imperative that our employees continue to be part of our growth and their input is highly valued in how we live and breathe our new brand.
Given its phenomenal commercial success, not to mention the award recognition it is receiving, it is clear that Flynn has hit upon a winning formula that is seeing it compete with, if not surpass, much more established construction businesses within Ireland. What’s more, as its sphere of influence increases further afield into the likes of London and Copenhagen, the company’s forward progression doesn’t look like slowing anytime yet.
