FKM Fit Out Limited – Eight decades of success

Next year, FKM Fit Out Limited will celebrate its 80th anniversary, a testament to the Dublin-based company’s enduring success, largely attributed to its exceptional team. This is further exemplified by the recognition of Senior Interior Designer, Linda Williams, who is a finalist for the prestigious Women in Construction Award 2024.

“Being shortlisted in the Excellence in Architecture & Design category was a complete surprise, and I’m thrilled to represent FKM Fit Out Limited alongside such outstanding nominees,” says Linda, who joined the company two years ago. “I’m deeply grateful for this opportunity; it holds significant meaning for me.”

Despite her relatively short tenure, Linda acknowledges that the support she has received from FKM Fit Out Limited has been pivotal in her nomination. “We have an incredible team here, and their support has allowed me to integrate swiftly and focus on leveraging my prior experience in the architecture sector. This has enabled me to engage in all aspects of design and build, providing me with a comprehensive understanding of projects. The progression I’ve made and the experience of seeing a project through from inception to completion is immensely rewarding, despite the challenges.”

A notable project that Linda has spearheaded is the 22,000 sq ft office development for OUTsurance. “We worked closely with the client to understand their branding and fit-out requirements,” she explains. “By comprehensively understanding their culture, we incorporated these elements into the design, making them prominent in the office space. Adhering to precise guidelines and maintaining weekly meetings allowed us to capture their vision accurately, culminating in a highly successful project.”

FKM Fit Out Limited’s Chief Operations Officer, Breda Gleeson, has been equally impressed with Linda’s contributions: “As a small business of just 30 people, we prioritize quality over quantity. Linda has been a remarkable addition to our team, bringing valuable experience with her. We’re delighted with how seamlessly she has integrated.

“Recruiting in today’s climate is challenging, so finding someone who can immediately contribute is a relief. We pride ourselves on having the best professionals in the industry, and Linda’s nomination for this award validates this belief.

“We’ve always been a people-centric business, fostering a culture that encourages continuous learning and skill development. This approach not only helps our staff reach their full potential but also builds loyalty and reduces turnover, minimizing the need for frequent recruitment. We’ve cultivated a wonderful team that has created an exceptional working environment.”

Beyond its talented personnel, FKM Fit Out Limited’s longevity is also attributed to its adaptability. Originally a mechanical and electrical business, it transitioned into a fit-out operation over 30 years ago, capitalizing on the wave of foreign investment in the Irish market.

The Covid-19 pandemic posed significant challenges, casting doubt on the future of the fit-out market as remote work became prevalent. Fortunately, the sector rebounded robustly, and FKM Fit Out Limited continues to enjoy a strong pipeline of projects.

“There was initial apprehension, which is understandable, but people have adapted, and a new normal has emerged,” says Linda. “This period tested our office design capabilities, pushing us to innovate and provide solutions for clients. The social aspect of office life is drawing more people back.”

Emerging technologies continue to shape the market, as Breda notes: “AI is driving a shift, particularly in professional services and the legal sector, from older buildings to newer, sustainable offices. We’re also seeing significant redevelopment of brown stock.

“We’re currently working on revitalizing an old building to achieve LEED Gold accreditation. This is part of a broader trend of sustainable upgrades to existing structures. Sustainability is a top priority for our clients as they transition from environmentally unfriendly buildings. Enhancing energy efficiency is a key focus of our design strategy.”

“Our approach to sustainability is holistic,” adds Linda. “We meticulously select materials, considering environmental impact from furniture to carpets to paint. Every detail matters, including how we dispose of old furniture.”

FKM Fit Out Limited has established a robust supply chain to meet these exacting standards and continually seeks suppliers to enhance its offerings.

Demonstrating its forward-thinking ethos and commitment to staff development, Linda is currently undertaking courses in LEED and Wellbeing to expand her expertise, reinforcing why she is a contender for the Women in Construction Award. This dedication to improvement underscores why FKM Fit Out Limited is nearing eight decades of successful operation, continually striving for excellence in all facets of its business.

In addition, FKM Fit Out Limited’s Workplace Consultancy services have become integral to their operations. By understanding client needs and workplace culture, FKM Fit Out Limited offers tailored solutions that enhance productivity and employee satisfaction. This consultative approach ensures that every project is not only functional but also aligns with the client’s strategic goals and cultural values.

Furthermore, FKM Fit Out Limited’s strategic roadmap for sustainability underscores its commitment to transforming old stock into LEED-accredited buildings. This journey involves meticulous planning, innovative design, and the implementation of sustainable practices to meet and exceed environmental standards. Through this roadmap, FKM Fit Out Limited not only enhances the sustainability credentials of its projects but also contributes to the broader goal of creating a more environmentally responsible built environment.
