Clearway urges contractors to rethink their site security as construction crime continues to rise.
Clearway has launched a new white paper, The True Cost of Plant Theft on UK Construction Sites, revealing that the financial impact of plant theft extends far beyond the value of the stolen equipment, with a single incident potentially costing contractors more than £250,000 once delays, contractual penalties and operational disruption are taken into account.
Drawing on industry research and real-world project experience, the report highlights that more than 11,000 plant thefts are reported annually in the UK, while actual figures are believed to be significantly higher due to underreporting. It also shows that theft is increasingly driven by organised criminal gangs targeting high-value assets such as excavators, telehandlers and dumpers.
The white paper challenges the common assumption that insurance provides complete protection, explaining how uninsured costs, project delays, increased premiums and contractual liabilities can leave contractors carrying substantial financial risk.
