City Hire recently announced the acquisition of tool & plant hire company Construct-Equip in an all-share purchase.
Construct-Equip owner Allan McCafferty will be assisting in the handover of day-to-day tasks before enjoying his well-earned retirement spending time with children and grandchildren, as well as frequenting his favourite golf courses.
City Hire is taking on both the Birmingham and Telford branch including all staff and assets and will begin investing in the business immediately with plans in to purchase new machinery to aid growth.
Seller Allan McCafferty said: “I put down our success over the years to putting customers first, and it was important to sell to new owners that would continue that philosophy. I’ve been involved in Construct-Equip since it was initially set up in 1989 as a new venture of Diamond Products supplies, and it’s nice to know that all the reputation we’ve worked hard to build will pass into safe hands.”
Sales Director Lionel Burgess added: “We have many existing clients with sites in Birmingham and the West Midlands region, and the acquisition will really help us serve these customers better and connect our North-West operation with our London locations, giving us geographical coverage throughout the heart of England. The team at Construct-Equip share many of our values and have built an excellent reputation in the area.
“We are really excited to start investing in the Midlands region and will ensure the two depots in Birmingham and Telford are fully stocked up with the same equipment range we have across the rest of the business.
“This is another milestone for us in our strategic growth plan and the team is ready to continue growing throughout 2023 and beyond.”
Construct-Equip was founded in 1989 and supplies Construction and Civil Engineering contractors across the West Midlands from its depots in Birmingham and Telford.Current owner Allan McCafferty has focused on establishing a reliable plant hire business supplying repeat customers for over a decade.
The news followed City Hire’s opening last year of a new distribution centre in Dagenham, East London. This new site has been a multi-million pound investment, stocked with thousands of brand new tools and construction equipment.
Its flagship service offering with guaranteed stock availability and same-day deliveries will be supported by this site, with a full product range stocked.
City Hire’s FORS Silver accredited transport team are operating a number of vehicles from this location that will supply construction sites across East London, Essex and Kent.
Commitment to providing quality equipment and an outstanding, reliable hire service has resulted in growth that has demanded additional warehousing space. This centre will support growth in City Hire’s core market of London and the South East, and crucially help many thousands of construction projects be completed on time, within budget and safely.
In addition, this new operating centre will help City Hire to reduce average mileage per trip, reducing its carbon footprint.
City Tool Hire Ltd also acquired Liver Plant & Tool Hire in an all-share purchase.
Liver Plant Hire was established by Peter Kay in 2005, who has led the company through consistent growth in the past 16 years. From his decades of experience running tool hire depots, he has led the growth of Liver Plant Hire into a well-respected provider of tools, site equipment and plant in the North West region.
City Hire focuses on serving trade customers, and found the ideal opportunity to enter a new geographic region with Liver Plant Hire. City Hire plans to continue doing what it does best with the acquisition, hiring quality equipment to the construction industry supported by its technology and people.

In further developments, City Hire has taken delivery of a further batch of 3.5t Vans from Mercedes-Benz, built to FORS specification by JC Payne. This investment will support its ever increasing customer base with fast delivery of top quality construction equipment, in-line with its company mission.
Cith Hire’s transport team are pleased to have increased their capacity, and the vehicles will spend little time idle before being loaded with equipment and used to supply construction sites across London.
