Mitie’s Landscapes business has taken another step towards achieving increased sustainable operations with the purchase of four electric TE Gator utility vehicles (manufactured by John Deere). These are currently being used to deliver onsite landscaping services for its client at Sellafield Ltd.
Battery powered, the zero emissions vehicles are able to operate for eight hours per day with an overnight charge (costing only £1 per night). The vehicles are also able to accommodate capacities of 409kg each which further reduces energy expend on their usage.
The TE Gator utility vehicles were obtained to assist dedicated on site external cleaning operatives at Sellafield who are responsible for removing a range of general and green waste generated from landscaping services. The electric trucks were deemed a much more sustainable alternative than purchasing a commercial vehicle, reducing emissions and fuel consumption as well as reducing the carbon foot print as part of the Mitie service.
David Slater, Head of Operations, comments: “The trucks won’t just be used to remove waste that we create; it is also part of a new initiative on the site in the battle against litter. As Sellafield is adjacent to the Cumbrian West coast, where wind-blown litter collects in numerous locations around the site. The Gators will be used by a dedicated litter clearance team to help keep Sellafield litter free and pristine.”
The TE Gator truck will also be a forthcoming addition to Mitie’s gritting business with plans to fit the vehicle with a gritting hopper.
