A large construction company that provides precast concrete solutions is fresh off the back of its busiest ever trading period.
SCC Design Build specialise in the production of precast concrete solutions and has supplied its products to a diverse number of projects, from student accommodation builds to multi-storey car parks, hotels to high-rise tower blocks.
Directors at the company say that the last six months has been its best trading period – with revenues in this six-months alone surpassing any previous fiscal year.
On what is driving the growth, Commercial Director Jim Durkan comments: “During the past six months we have seen a huge upsurge in the number of enquiries we are receiving from both architects and main contractors.
“Analysis of the figures shows that student accommodation builds, and the leisure sector are particularly active for us and there has also been an increase in work for major residential builds. What’s also interesting is that customers are partnering with us ahead of other suppliers because we can provide a bespoke made solution; and also due to the fact that we can produce everything on one site.”
Jim says that there has also been an upsurge in popularity for concrete, as a material.
Concrete is naturally fire resistant – a much sought-after quality following the Grenfell Tower disaster – and is much less susceptible to corrosion that its steel alternative. Pre-cast concrete also means that much of a project’s construction can take place off-site, speeding up a development and decreasing its overall costs significantly.
However, as a material concrete is also incredibly versatile, and, in recent years, this has led to a rise in the number of enquiries about architectural concrete.
“Architectural concrete can be moulded into virtually any shape and can take on a variety of colours,” explains Jim.
“Today we can see great variation in our cities’ skylines and architects are increasingly eager to create buildings that are visually interesting and reflect the character of their area. The versatility of architectural concrete supports and enables this level of creativity.
“At SCC we’ve seen a recent surge in architectural concrete enquires and believe this marks a regeneration in the material’s popularity.”
SCC’s data shows that enquiries about both precast and architectural concrete are not just coming from the company’s own region but from all over the UK. Surely a positive sign for the construction industry, in such uncertain economic times SCC’s success also has wider implications.
