Work begins on new £11m Cardiff student accommodation

Work is underway on a multi-million pound student accommodation development in Cardiff. Throughout the summer, Midas Construction has been on site at the city’s Oxford Street, preparing the land for the three-floor development.

When complete next summer, the new accommodation will boast 281 rooms including more than 115 self-contained studio apartments as well as a number of modern kitchens.

The £11m build will also see around 100 Midas staff working on site over the next year, with a number of local apprentices receiving hands-on experience of the construction industry while helping to create the new student halls.

Kevin Cornish, Midas Construction’s site manager for the Oxford Street build, said: “We have been here since June and have already carried out enabling works and stripped the site ready for the development with the structural steelworks beginning to take shape.”

He added that as a member of the Considerate Construction Scheme, Midas is also keen to engage with the community and in the Welsh capital, a number of projects are underway to build lasting links with those living and working nearby.

He said: “We are currently organising a community week for mid-September and plan to work with the nearby YMCA centre to refurbish the children’s play area at the rear of the Plasnewydd Centre.

“Midas will be working closely with the local community throughout the development as we continue to focus on supporting and enriching the neighbourhoods we work within.”

Midas has won a number of student accommodation contracts recently with the firm currently involved with builds in Bath and Exeter, as well as the new development in Cardiff. In Bath, Midas is working on a £16.6m development set to transform the former landmark Twerton Mill into a modern, purpose-built student housing complex. The construction company is also on site at two student accommodation sites in Exeter, creating 290 new beds over the coming months.

Alan Hope, Midas Group’s Chief Executive, said: “Securing these contracts highlights the hard work, dedication and skill of our workforce in delivering modern student developments across the region. Midas continues to secure contracts, develop and grow stronger as a business year on year and I am looking forward to the future and our continued success.

“As part of our vision as a growing company we also have a commitment to the communities we serve and with every development we are not only creating a new building but forming partnerships with local neighbourhoods, suppliers and sub-contractors.”
