Stanmore Quality Surfacing Ltd – A leading reputation

Since it was created in 1996 Stanmore Quality Surfacing has successfully established itself as one of the country’s leading specialist reinstatement contractors. The London-based company operates across the south of England carrying out projects for major utility companies, local authorities, highway agencies and major contractors.

“We have various depots ranging from Essendon, Hertfordshire, down to Ringmer, East Sussex,” says Daniel O’Mara, Head of Street Works and Defect Prevention. “We have a successful term maintenance and private works department as well as our very own recycling company, Quality Recycling Solutions. Our clients include Affinity Water, Skanska, Thames Water, UK Power Networks, tRIIO, Amey and Ringway Jacobs.”

With nearly 20 years of experience, SQS offers both a professional and diverse range of services to its clients and is committed to material sustainability and environmental excellence. The family-owned company produces its own recycled backfill material called Ecobase and a new apparatus surround material, Eco-Surround, for its projects and successfully carries out up to 100,000 jobs every year. “We have increased quite rapidly since I joined the company in 2013,” says Mr O’Mara. “We have almost doubled in size and have recently won some major work, so it is very busy at the moment.”

The excellent work that SQS carries out has helped it gain respect and recognition from other industry players and the company was shortlisted at the 2014 NJUG Awards based on the high quality service it provides. “It is amazing and even though we were runners-up it is still a great achievement,” adds Mr O’Mara. “The recognition will allow the industry to see the great work that’s happening here and acknowledge what we have done.”

With over 500 staff and personnel, the company’s continued success is due to its dedicated employees who are highly trained and qualified in their area of work. The company places an emphasis on continually developing its staff via regular training to ensure it is better able to deliver the required standard of work and customer service. “The good thing about working in a family business is it gives us greater flexibility and the ability to work together to make decisions for the betterment of the company,” explains Mr O’Mara. “We have our own training academy in our main depot, Scratchwood, as well as other training facilities in a lot of our depots. We have a training manager who is accredited to provide street works training to our employees. We have developed many of our staff having put them on the appropriate training sessions and they’ve moved on to become supervisors and managers. It is now their duty to ensure we have quality staff employed. There are a number of elements of training we provide to our staff and operatives and this has helped us achieve these incredible results.”

This continual investment in its resources and staff has allowed SQS to provide a professional and personal service to all its customers and has seen it steadily increase its workload over the years. “The reason we are so successful is that we are constantly adapting the way we work and implementing industry innovations,” adds Mr O’Mara. “We have high standards and strict regulations that we work to and we use our own internal works management system called Ontrack. As we grow we are constantly developing that system and one of our main projects for the forthcoming year is to ensure Ontrack continues to develop and aid us in the way we work.”

Having cemented a reputation as one of the best in the industry, SQS is now looking to maintain the momentum it has built up and capitalise on the upward curve it is currently on. Regarding the future of the company, Mr O’Mara concludes: “Our overall goal is to continue our successful growth with our new and existing partners without ever compromising on quality.”
