Sleator Plant has been appointed as the official dealer of rigid and articulated dump trucks in Northern Ireland by Terex Trucks. The Newtownabbey-based plant and machinery supplier is responsible for providing a range of products to the construction and material re-handling sectors having developed a solid reputation for providing top quality service since its establishment in 1997.
“Around 12 months ago we conducted a product rationalisation process within the business,” explains Jonathan Campbell, General Manager. “We had a portfolio of around ten brands and we decided to lose some of the peripheral brands that we felt did not fit our strategic view. We instead took the decision to focus on Terex site dumpers and Genie access equipment and in January we were appointed the Northern Ireland dealer for Parker crushers and screeners. This then led to the Terex Trucks dealership in June.”
Sleator Plant announced the new dealership at the 2015 Balmoral Show in Belfast with the presentation of a TA300 articulated dump truck that was viewed by 90,000 visitors over the show’s three days. “The dump truck on our stand proved to be extremely popular and was a real eye-catching piece of kit,” adds Mr Campbell. “Even better was that on the eve of the show we were delighted to announce the very first dump truck sale to local building and electrical engineering company, FP McCann Ltd. This meant that at the launch of the Terex Trucks dealership we had already sold a machine, which gave us instant credibility and was also fantastic advertising. Since the launch we have an extremely strong pipeline of enquiries of at least a dozen really strong leads we are hoping to seal over the coming weeks and months.”

Over the years Sleator Plant has developed strong relationships with its wide range of suppliers and manufacturers to provide its customers with top quality products and service. “It’s great to be a part of Ballyvesey Holdings due to their strengths and experience. We also have a sister company called Ballyvesey Finance that can assist our customers and provide them with flexible, tailored and cost effective finance packages. Having our own in-house finance company enables our customers to see us as a ‘one-stop shop’ for everything.”

The company’s ethos is not just about the number of units it sells, but is now focused more towards the level of customer service it can provide. “If the foundation is right, the customer will keep coming back because they know they can rely on us,” explains Mr Campbell. “That’s important to us. If a customer’s machine breaks down we have a target time of being on-site within four hours of any call coming into our premises. We measure our response time and we have had an engineer on-site within the hour at every single breakdown in the last 12 months.”
Even with the success Sleator Plant has achieved over the years and the new Terex dealership arrangement, the business continues to face challenges on a daily basis. “We currently face the challenge of seeking out an excavator/shovel manufacturer to complete our product portfolio. The challenge is not just in adding new brands but also in being able to back-up and support the brand. All mechanical equipment can break down so it’s about assuring our customers we can offer them a five-star service every time and ensuring our staff are focused in giving the customers that high quality service.”
Regarding the aims for the future, Mr Campbell concludes: “We have entered discussions for a number of manufacturers for an excavator/shovel product. The people we have already met, their product did not fit in with the strategy we are adopting. We have concentrated on a small number of premium brands and this strategy has done well. It is all about added quality and added value for the customer so the focus will be on our after sales service and adding resources to that part of the business. Once we secure an excavator/shovel product then we will seek additional sales personnel for the business. Our aim is to become the number one plant dealership in the country.”
With the growing resources it has behind its offering and its continual commitment to provide a first class service, Sleator Plant is certainly on the right track to achieving this objective.
