Given that it was the first time GBN Services has ever put itself forward for an award, it is evidence of the quality of the waste specialist’s operation that it has been shortlisted for a prestigious MRW National Recycling Award within the Independent Operator of the Year category. The recognition further cements its reputation as the leading skip hire, recycling and waste company across London and the south-east.
“To be shortlisted at our first attempt at winning an award really shows that we are doing things the right way in-line with the wider industry standard,” explains Karen Smith, Business Development Manager. “From an internal perspective the recognition is also a pat on the back for everyone within the company and the effort they all put in. This approach might be led from the very top but actually delivering it is down to the hard work of the entire 230-strong workforce.
“As for why we decided to finally put ourselves forward for an award, we decided it would be a good way to raise awareness of what we’re about as a company and the quality of our offering. Since making that decision we’ve been working really hard for the past year to put our award proposal together so it’s great that we’ve been shortlisted.”
Although it might be new to awards, GBN Services certainly has plenty of experience under its belt having been incorporated in 1986. It has since developed to the extent that it now has a strong presence in the south-east supported by established UK-wide partners. What’s more, its customer focused, reliable and sustainable services are reinforced by business operating systems accredited with ISO 9001, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001.

GBN Services began life as a haulage operator based in Leyton and operating UK wide. It then progressed into skip hire, recycling and waste services in 1995. As the business grew it bought an additional depot in Basildon in 2001, which allowed it to better serve the Essex area, expand its services and grow further.
To accelerate the expansion process a number of acquisitions followed, including the likes of NSM in Southgate and RCL skips (2005), Eco Logic and F Darlington (2006), Churn Waste (2007) and Ace Waste (2008). As a consequence, by 2010 GBN had appeared at number 15 in the top 50 UK fastest growing waste companies (CIWM February 2010). It then went on to acquire Uxbridge Recycling and Bridgeman Skips in 2011 and Hunts Waste in 2012. Since then its focus has been on fully integrating the businesses under one name, ensuring its commercial, construction and household customers receive the strong customer focus for which GBN Services has become known.
Throughout GNB Services’ growth and development one of the key strong points of the business has been its emphasis on health and safety. “As a company we’re continually investing in new machinery and our fleet to not only make our operation more efficient but also to ensure the highest standards of safety,” outlines David Wolfenden, Group Health & Safety Manager. “This investment in new equipment is underpinned with a strong training programme to ensure they are fully comfortable with the machinery and can operate it safely.
“From a depot point of view, we currently have seven sites across London and Essex and are now aiming to increase our coverage in south London if we can locate the right premises, so we’re also looking to invest in our bricks and mortar operation too. We hope to have a south London depot up and running within the next 12 months and this will really help us move to the next level in terms of coverage. As soon as a suitable opportunity comes up we will go for it.”
Given the growth it has demonstrate over the past 30 years, GBN Services’ ongoing expansion looks assured and it would be no surprise if further award success came its way in the future too.
