With over 100 years’ operation under its belt, it is clear Hampshire-based Drew Construction must be doing something right. This was once again underlined earlier this year when the company was amongst 16 participating contractors invited by the NFB to attend a prestigious ceremony at the House of Commons to recognise the achievements of its members working towards the Government’s 2016 mandate through its BIM (Building Information Modelling) Exemplar programme.
“Such recognition further promotes our commitment and compliance with the Government’s 2016 mandate,” explains Katie Cull, Drew Construction. “We have an in-house BIM Champion that has gone through the programme and is fully versed in what’s coming up and what our clients expect from us.”
Drew Construction’s invitation was in particular recognition of its commitment to BIM Technology. The programme, supported by the CITB, has provided intensive support to participating companies over the last three years, each working with an NFB BIM Adviser to develop understanding of BIM, implement a structured programme, and apply it for the benefit of their respective organisations. Drew Construction’s internal Working Group comprises a number of directors and staff covering a broad base of disciplines within the company dedicated to helping drive the BIM process through. It is a natural progression for the business to further build on its ethos of collaborative working and will enable it to enhance the service it provides to clients and consultants.
Through BIM the UK construction industry is undergoing its very own digital revolution. BIM is a way of working; it is information modelling and information management in a team environment, with all team members working to the same standards as one another. BIM creates value from the combined efforts of people, process and technology, by integrating different aspects of the design more effectively. In this way, the risk of mistakes or discrepancies is reduced, abortive costs minimised, resulting in a greater whole life value for the project. BIM data can be used to illustrate the entire building life cycle and Drew Construction is excited to be moving forward as part of this revolution in the construction industry.
Drew Construction remains a privately owned main contractor in Hampshire and whilst it also has a small development company, its primary business is main contracting. It operates across Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, West Sussex, Devon, Cornwall, Surrey and southern Berkshire working on projects up to £8m in value in most sectors including education, health and care, private residential, affordable housing, community and leisure, and commercial, as well as defence. A workforce of 70 employees supports the company’s activities including office staff, site managers and directly employed ground workers and labour.
“We have an extensive and varied portfolio, having worked for many Local Authorities, Charities and Developers throughout the south. Our management approach differs from others; all of our projects are Director-led. This provides a seamless transition between tendering and construction stage and ensures our Client avoids a lengthy decision making process and instead gains a proactive prompt approach.”

“Moving forward, we have recently secured an array of schemes ranging from a £5.5m manufacturing building for an International Client to a multiple flats contract for a Devon based Housing Association, and a new £3m teaching facility for a Hampshire College. We are excited to continue with our ethos of delivering construction excellence.”
Such a forward-thinking approach has obviously set Drew Construction in good stead in the past and is sure to continue proving to be a winning formula as the company builds further on its already impressive history.
