Despite having only been in business for little over two years, Coast2Coast Group has already made a name for itself within Wales and the south-west having helped thousands of customers become more energy efficient. This burgeoning reputation was further underlined when the West Glamorgan company was nominated for a Green Deal & ECO Award in the Wales region, as well as coming second in the UK for the Insulation and Fabric Installer of the Year and third in the UK for the Boiler and Renewable Installer of the Year in the Green Deal and ECO Awards in Manchester on 19 June.
“To have received this recognition so early was very nice but it was also something of a shock,” explains Rhys Elias, Director. “I’d put the recognition down to the fact that from Day One we’ve always tried to do things the right way by putting the customer first and making sure we grow our infrastructure to support the growth we’ve seen. As a consequence we’ve expanded from four employees when we began back in April 2013 to over 85 employees now.
“I started out providing cavity wall and loft insulation under the ECO scheme before partnering up with two other directors, Andrew Gove and Neil Lloyd, both of which have worked within the industry for the last 25 years. With their combined experience we’ve been able to move forward and diversify into external wall insulation, gas boilers, roof insulation, biomass boilers, and solar PV, both free and paid. We’ve just tried to get a grasp on the ECO market and the energy efficiency programme and we now cover the whole of Wales and the south-west of England, as well as also reaching out as far afield as Manchester.”
Having built up such a sound infrastructure and a more comprehensive range of services, moving forward Coast2Coast is now seeing numerous opportunities within the renewable market, particularly solar PV, biomass boilers, ground and air source heat pumps, solar thermal, and external wall insulation. As well as developing internally the company has also continually strengthened its links with its supply chain. “We’ve very much maintained a good relationship with all of our suppliers,” adds Mr Elias. “They help us, we help them, and that’s proven to be a great way of working.”

The well developed supply chain and strong infrastructure has enabled Coast2Coast to overcome the hurdles it has encountered since its creation, particularly with regards to the slow payment terms it has encountered, something that can be particularly tricky for a company still finding its feet. It has therefore developed a more cautious approach to ensure it doesn’t get its fingers burned and it is currently very hesitant as to whether to get involved in ECO2 or not. The Green Deal Home Improvement Plan, however, has been quite the opposite and will be a main area of focus for the business moving forward.
“For the next 12 months we’ll be concentrating on the existing products that we’ve got and making positive amendments to them,” says Mr Elias. “We’ll also increase the number of sales and the volume of installs we’re carrying out so I’ll be possibly looking to grow the size of the company by maybe another 20, 30 or even 40 employees.
“Having seen such strong growth on the employee side we’ve been careful to ensure the training programmes are in place to achieve the quality that we’re looking for. We place heavy emphasis on employee training and employee satisfaction as we want them to work somewhere they enjoy. We therefore work hard to maintain the family atmosphere we’ve had here since the very beginning.”
This approach has obviously been working well for Coast2Coast and the award recognition it has already received can only bode well for the company moving forward.
