2016 saw Dublin-based Burke Joinery celebrating its 30th anniversary and evidence of how it has been able to reach such a significant milestone recently came in the form of the company’s success in winning a prestigious Fit Out Award in the Supplier of the Year category.
“We were founded back in 1986 by my father John Burke Senior and what makes our 30th anniversary year even more special for ourselves is that we’ve completed some really nice work this year with some other high end projects in the pipeline including the refurbishment of the US Embassy here in Dublin,” explains John T Burke, Director. “It’s an exciting time for us as a business, particularly as we’re seeing growing opportunities becoming available.”
As for how the company’s longevity has been achieved, the emphasis on quality and innovation, as the Fit Out Award success suggests, has been key, as has Burke Joinery’s general approach to business. “We remain very much a family-based business with strong family values,” adds Mr Burke. “My father said to me from the very beginning of the company that it doesn’t matter how big you become as a business, it’s all about preparation and making sure you work hard to achieve the end result. This has always stayed with me and it has remained the overriding ethos within the company. As a result, we have really strong relationships with our customers and own suppliers.”
The strength of this approach enabled Burke Joinery to survive the economic downturn of a few years ago and having come through this difficult period unscathed, it is now looking to capitalise on the growing opportunities that are becoming available as the market continues to recover.
“We’ve just recently completed a really interesting project in Dublin City for Airbnb, the online rental company. It was a pretty quick turnaround, so it was a project that really tested us, but it also allowed us to showcase our expertise and our product range because it was such a unique development. It involved about 900,000 euros’ worth of joinery and over the span of this project we supplied a wide range of high quality unique products. The range included integrated door sets, quiet zones, solid birch task tables, oak lathed feature walls, acoustic panelling and bespoke oak locker units.
“We are also currently working on a student accommodation project delivering over 470 bedrooms and 103 kitchens on Dorset Street in Dublin in collaboration with Bennett Construction. The project is expected to finish in February 2017 and we are hoping to continue operating in this growing area of the marketplace as there is currently a massive shortage of student beds in Dublin.”

With the strength of its offering, Burke Joinery is well placed to add further to its already impressive history. “We can certainly compete really well with other operators within the joinery sector, as we have one of the best facilities within Ireland and we’re ideally located in the heart of Dublin,” adds Mr Burke. “We’re also seeing growing export opportunities and having already exported to the UK, we’re starting to see a huge amount of potential in other overseas markets, particularly from an acoustic panelling point of view.
“We are extremely innovative as a company and we love working with like-minded businesses that are continually looking to push standards ever higher. We’re keen to use different forms of materials that have never been used before in the traditional joinery context, whilst at the same time we also strive to be a very green business. As a consequence, we have developed a really robust environmental management system and are working really hard to reduce our carbon emissions.”
With its unyielding commitment to improving all aspects of its operation, it’s not hard to see how Burke Joinery has been able to achieve three decades of operation or win a Fit Out Award. What’s more, the company has all the capabilities to develop even further as it begins to write the next chapter in its history.
